We’re grateful to everyone who joined us this past Saturday, January 17 for a special program presented in collaboration with @writlargeprojects. In celebration of “Act On It! Artists, Community, and the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles,” we hosted a panel moderated by Dr. Tiffany E. Barber and featuring Dale Davis, Dominique Moody, Margaret Garcia, and Linda Vallejo. Many thanks to Lauren Hanson (@allthingsmodcon), Assistant Curator of Modern Art at LACMA, for the opening remarks.
Participants reflected on the significance of the Brockman Gallery and the landmark 1986 show “Common Ground,” curated by Linda Vallejo. The afternoon concluded with a rousing performance by Jimetta Rose & the Voices of Creation (@thevoicesofcreation @jimettarose).
You have a few (extra!) days left to see “Act on It!” which closes Saturday, January 24, 2026. More info at the link in our bio.
“Act On It!” was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (@lacma) in collaboration with the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College; Riverside Art Museum; Lancaster Museum of Art and History; and California State University, Northridge, Art Galleries.
“Act On It! Artists, Community, and the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles” highlights the lasting significance of the Brockman Gallery in South LA. The show includes dozens of works from the @lacma collection—and VPAM’s presentation also includes works by Black and Chicano artists from our permanent collection.
Among these works is “Jump” by Suzanne Jackson (1976), pictured here, which was gifted to VPAM directly by Vincent Price. Jackson ran the influential Gallery 32 from 1968 to 1970, platforming the work of Black artists. One of the space’s most significant exhibitions was “Sapphire Show,” a survey of Black women artists in Los Angeles that was the first of its kind.
Jackson’s own art-making spans more than six decades and is the focus of the exhibition “Suzanne Jackson: What Is Love,” currently on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (@sfmoma).
Only a few (extra!) days to visit “Act on It!” before it closes! Visit the exhibition at VPAM through January 24, 2026.
