On View: April 22 – June 14, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 19, 2025, 3 to 5 p.m.
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Opening April 22, 2025, the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) at East Los Angeles College (ELAC), in collaboration with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), proudly presents New Voices: The 2025 District Wide Student Art Biennial.
For more than sixty years, the student art exhibition at ELAC has showcased exceptional artworks produced on campus throughout the academic year. In 2022, the exhibition expanded to invite students from all nine LACCD campuses, including ELAC, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Trade–Technical College, Los Angeles Valley College, and West Los Angeles College.
Now held biannually, this district-wide exhibition showcases student artworks produced in diverse media across numerous instructional departments. This year, New Voices will spotlight works created by students between the Spring 2023 and Fall 2024 semesters. Works on display were produced or inspired by classes as wide-ranging as art, architecture, photography, graphic design, illustration, costume design, media arts, and animation.
“The 2025 District Wide Student Art Biennial is a testament to the incredible talent and creative energy across the Los Angeles Community College District,” said VPAM Director Steven Wong. “Since 1957, the student art exhibition at ELAC has served as a platform for artistic innovation, and its expansion into a district-wide biennial further amplifies the diverse perspectives and practices of our students. I’m thrilled for this year’s exhibition, considering that the selection process was highly competitive, with 398 artwork submissions from all nine campuses and only 58 artists chosen. The impressive quality and diversity of work reflect the dedication, resilience, and important voices of our student artists.”
Organized by VPAM, the exhibition is juried by a committee of arts professionals, including:
Adam F. Scott is a nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artist. Adam received his BFA in Painting at California State University Long Beach and his MFA Drawing and Painting at The School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad. Selected exhibitions include: The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; The Yokohama Museum Of Art, Yokohama, Japan; The Prague Biennale, The National Museum of Prague, CZ; DoArt Gallery, Seoul, Korea; and more.
He is now Associate Professor of Art, in the Arts, Media, Performance Department at Los Angeles Mission College and is presently a co-curator of its AMP Gallery.
Jill Olguin Smith is an artist and educator. A native of San Pedro, California, she received her BFA from Loyola Marymount College in Studio Art/Art History and a BFA from Art Center College of Design in Photography. Her photography clients include MOCA, TBWA CHIAT/DAY, Esquire, Metropolis and Detour magazine. Her work has been featured at the Palos Verdes Art Center, The Loft Gallery, and LaBand Art Gallery.
She is currently an Instructor in the Media Arts department of East Los Angeles College.
The opening of New Voices will be celebrated with a reception on Saturday, April 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is free, no reservations required. In preparation for the reception, the Museum will be closed to the public on April 19.
