DESCRIPTION:Before You Now: Artist & Curator Panel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special artist-led walkthrough with acclaimed Chicano poet\, author\, and photographer Luis J. Rodriguez for the exhibition Always Running: Photography by Luis J. Rodriguez. Rodriguez will guide visitors through the exhibition\, sharing personal stories\, historical context\, and reflections on his photographs and murals documenting Chicana/o youth\, gang culture\, and life in the San Gabriel Valley from the 1960s through the 1980s.  \n\n\n\nGuests are invited to engage directly with the artist and gain deeper insight into the images and experiences that shaped his work and literary legacy. \n\n\n\nThe event will also feature a mini book fair presented by Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore. Rodriguez (born 1954) is a renowned Chicano poet\, novelist\, mentor\, and activist who served as the 2014-2016 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. Born in El Paso and raised in Watts/East L.A\, he overcame his experience with gang violence as a youth to become a leading voice in Chicano literature and community activism. He is best known for his memoir Always Running: La Vida Loca\, Gang Days in L.A.\, and for co-founding Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in the San Fernando Valley. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nACKNOWLEDGMENTS\n\n\n\nAlways Running: Photography by Luis. J Rodriguez is a traveling exhibition curated by artist and photographer Noé Montes in collaboration with Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore. Image courtesy of the artist.\n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate the opening reception and performance of Anida Yoeu Ali: The Buddhist Bug! \n\n\n\nMarking the first major solo exhibition of the series in the U.S.\, The Buddhist Bug is an expansive performance project that brings together myth\, humor\, spiritual inquiry\, and the lived experience of displacement. At its center is a monumental saffron-colored creature\, nearly 328 feet in length\, with a human face tightly framed in cloth at one end and a pair of feet at the other. Photo by Alborz Kamalizad.Image courtesy of the Seattle Art Museum.\n\n\n\n\n\nANIDA YOEu ALI\n\n\n\nAnida Yoeu Ali (b. 1974\, Battambang\, Cambodia) is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance\, installation\, video\, new media\, public encounters\, and social practice. Born in Cambodia and raised in Chicago\, Ali is a first-generation American of Malay\, Cham\, Khmer\, and Thai ancestry. Her work examines faith\, migration\, race\, gender\, and political history through larger-than-life personas that challenge inherited narratives and restrictive representations. \n\n\n\nAli received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a recipient of the 2020 Art Matters Fellowship and the 2015 Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong\, and is the co-founder of Studio Revolt\, an independent artist-run media lab. She currently lives and works in Tacoma\, Washington. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nacknowledgements\n\n\n\nAnida Yoeu Ali: The Buddhist Bug is organized by the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College. The exhibition is curated by Sonia Mak\, executive director\, Asian Arts Initiative\, with support from Steven Wong\, director\, Vincent Price Art Museum. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is made possible with lead support from The Mike Kelley Foundation.
