DESCRIPTION:Luis J. Rodriguez Artist walkthrough\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation with artist Luis J. Rodriguez and guest curator Noé Montes on turning lived experience into creative power\, presented in tandem with East Los Angeles College. \n\n\n\nIn celebration of the exhibition\, Always Running: Photography by Luis J. Rodriguez\, this town hall will highlight Rodriguez’s journey to becoming a writer and artist\, utilizing photography\, literature\, and education as tools for survival\, healing\, and change. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, join us for a post-event reception in ELAC’s S1/S2 Quad\, where food and drinks will be provided. \n\n\n\nELAC encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. SUMMARY:Ofelia Esparza Closing Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Luis J. Rodriguez Artist walkthrough\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special closing celebration of Ofelia Esparza: A Retrospective\, marking the culmination of the exhibition on view since October 2025. This free\, public program brings together community members\, artists\, and longtime supporters of Esparza’s work for an afternoon honoring women as artists\, educators\, and culture bearers. \n\n\n\nThe heart of the program will feature a panel conversation with Ofelia Esparza\, Yreina Cervántez\, and Betty Marín\, moderated by art historian and exhibition co-curator Sybil Venegas. Bringing together artist\, educators\, and cultural organizers\, the intergenerational dialogue will explore how these women have built and sustained spaces for Chicana/Latina art and culture. Reflecting on their roles as both culture bearers and leaders\, they will share how their work supports artistic communities through teaching\, collaboration\, and public practice—drawing on their deep connections to organizations such as Self Help Graphics & Art\, Tonalli Studio\, and the Alliance for California Traditional Arts. Rodriguez for the exhibition Always Running: Photography by Luis J. Rodriguez. Rodriguez will guide visitors through the exhibition\, sharing personal stories\, historical context\, and reflections on his photographs and murals documenting Chicana/o youth\, gang culture\, and life in the San Gabriel Valley from the 1960s through the 1980s.  \n\n\n\nGuests are invited to engage directly with the artist and gain deeper insight into the images and experiences that shaped his work and literary legacy. \n\n\n\nThe event will also feature a mini book fair presented by Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore. Rodriguez (born 1954) is a renowned Chicano poet\, novelist\, mentor\, and activist who served as the 2014-2016 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. Born in El Paso and raised in Watts/East L.A\, he overcame his experience with gang violence as a youth to become a leading voice in Chicano literature and community activism. He is best known for his memoir Always Running: La Vida Loca\, Gang Days in L.A.\, and for co-founding Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in the San Fernando Valley. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nACKNOWLEDGMENTS\n\n\n\nAlways Running: Photography by Luis.
